John Ellsworth

John Ellsworth

"I'm attracted to the concept of water. It's turbulent and strong; it's peaceful and reflective; and it's common and humble—always seeking the lowest levels."

John’s photos are noted for their unexpected points of view and reflections. He looks to photograph strong compositions that emphasize light, shadow, water, and often reflection as a visual form.

His perception of water is likely based on his experience on the water. He spent two years in the U.S. Navy, taught sailing in the West Indies for three summers for Sail Caribbean, earned a 50-ton Captain's license for auxiliary sailboats, sailed to Central America for three months in his youth with three friends, and has owned several sailboats along the way.

He studied visual communications and aesthetics at Queens College, Columbia University; and at the International Center of Photography, NYC. He’s also taken workshops with Galen Rowell, George Lepp, and Moose Peterson, noted outdoor photographers. He’s a professor emeritus of communications at Nassau Community College, Garden City, NY.

His writing or photography has appeared in Sail, Boating, Good Old Boat, The New York Times, Hamptons.com, Dan's Papers, and in several Huntington and Northport (NY) journals.

John has been living on the Eastern Shore since 2016 after having spent 30 years in Northport, NY.
