An iconic image of a restored Sphinx is depicted here in the late afternoon. Restoration efforts have been underway to repair the icon, but also to limit the proximity of the many visitors who come to see this ancient wonder.
Though this statue has suffered damage by war, occupying armies and tourists for centuries the government is making a concerted effort to repair and rebuild the stature as well as build a viewing platform that prevents more vandalism and damage from happening, going forward. During this restoration, archaeologists have uncovered evidence that the head and face of the Sphinx has been torn down and resculpted with the face of many different rulers.
